53. The Foundational Texts of Indian Philosophy | Dvaita | Swami Tattwamayananda
Indian Philosophy, spanning over more than six thousand years, represents a unique intellectual, cultural and spiritual heritage of human civilization. It is not only “love of learning” (as philosophy is usually defined) or just an intellectual journey in search of the highest truths of life and existence, but it is also a quest for their practical realization in our everyday life. The different schools of Indian philosophy were established by great preceptors from time immemorial to enable their students to manifest the highest ethical and spiritual values in their lives.
The speaker Swami Tattwamayananda is the minister of the Vedanta Society of Northern California, San Francisco. In interpreting the doctrines of particular schools of thought, he has attempted to keep in touch with their respective foundational texts in Sanskrit or, in dealing with the Buddhist schools, with the texts in Pali.
In phase 1, he will be discussing the different schools of Vedanta (one of the ‘Āstika Darśana’s) beginning with Advaita, to be followed by the schools of Ramanuja, Madhva, Vallabha, Nimbarka, Baladeva, and others.
This series is hosted by the Stanford Hindu Students Association and being cross-posted on Vedanta Society of New York's UA-cam channel.

I do strongly believe in the philosophy. I want to practice it, since it is helping to live life better. I need to know something, please explain it to me Our consciousness is fully detached like a movie screen from experiences of body and mind then what carries the Karma to the next births. Why at all this is happening. How does it evolve to higher level of consciousness??? What is a purpose of continuing the life?

Theravada is a category of Shravaka school. But Shravaka school is not Theravada. Vaibhashika and Sautrantika are also Shravaka school, and Vatsiputriya school of vaibhashika, still believes in a self(not permanent, not unitary) that is not body or the mind,. They are also called Pudgalvada.

I have always had the doubt. Where does karma originate? In scientific terms, let's take the first birth of a soul into the world as a living being. Was that birth under that soul's control? Was it of his/her choosing? Leave that. Who you are born to, where you're born, what circumstances you're born under, who your parents are, etc., probably dictate 90-95% of what your actions will be in life. If that is the case, then there's a finite set of trajectories your life can take by virtue of who you're born to, where you're born, how you're brought up, the things that you learn as a child. This is just from human perspective. So then, how is Karma your doing? Is it not indirectly the case that by virtue of your birth the karma you'll accumulate is already written inside the finite trajectories/paths your life can take and one of those will eventually play out based on the decisions you make. if the decisions you make lead to karma, is it not unfair that the decisions you make are all based on the programming you receive when you're a child which is not under your control at all and most adults spend a lifetime realising it or fixing it or living without realising it at all? So then, why does karma even exist? Karma existing means there's free will. But at what point does it kick in? Because just because you have free will doesn't mean you are free. As a human being, for better part of your early years, you basically have no freedom to do whatever you feel like doing - you are programmed by your parents to believe in certain things and accept certain things as truths. So, that brings us to Karma. Is there a clear notion of what leads to accumulation of good/bad karma? And by virtue of the birth-death cycle, both good and bad karma are not favored for someone who wants moksha. right? So then, what leads to the freedom from this cycle?

@38:20 - It indeed literally means 'annihilation' of the mind. But the mind here would be thoughts, not the faculties of the mind like memory, imagination, recall ability etc. There would be pin drop silence in the mind, such that one perceives Reality directly without the mind filtering it, without the mind talking around it. For example - when one is really engrossed in something, say a game or music, they are totally involved and all attention is being paid to the object, and no thought arises but only the object is experienced - that would be destruction of mind. However, in this case, the mind or thoughts return but when a yogin has reached a certain advanced stage, they can exist without thoughts. Even when they are engaged with the world, they don't really think, they perceive. They have a very intuitive way of functioning, the mind functions more intuitively than via the mechanisms of thought and logic. The term annihilation/destruction of mind in fact aptly conveys the meaning of what happens in those states and stages to yogins. But it is very difficult for someone to intellectually understand without a direct experience.

Actually things are made of atoms. And atoms are made of fundamental particals. But you see they in combination give "No space" as reality or maya. I would think a personal god would inhibit enlightenment, and hold the person in karmic rebirth.. and if the person searching for a continuation of life experience over and over again with the pleasure and pain, this would seem better option, than what enlightenment 'liberation' offers..having a non-physical form.... What would be the reason a person would desire to not exist in a form that experiences pleasure and pain except to escape complete suffering in the existence of physical form?..
